On the night 5th/6th December, 1917, 7th King’s Royal Rifle Corps of 43 Brigade, 14th Division, moved into the front line in front of Passchendaele in the Ypres salient. They remained in these forward positions until relieved on 8th December continuously pounded by shell fire. The Battalion Diary also recorded that a number of officers and men also suffered from gas poisoning but as the symptoms were not evident until after they were relieved, they did not know what the cause of this was. During their three days in these trenches, which were little more than a string of shell holes, sixteen men were killed and another thirty three wounded. One of those killed was Charles Scott on 6th December. |
